This photo was taken with my Yashicamat twin lens reflex camera. To create the atmosphere of a hospital ward at night I used only the light from the nurse's anglepoise lamp. This gives a wonderful ridge of highlighting to her features and leaves you in no doubt about what she is. I did hold a large sheet of white card to one side of the camera to reflect back just enough light to fill some of the shadow areas. Although she was aware of my presence she was conscientiously absorbed in her work and so did not look at all posed.
